How the price comes together

Why is the filament estimate from the slicer not enough?

The slicer only knows the material. It knows nothing about the electricity the printer uses over two hours, the time you spend removing supports and sanding, or the prints that fail. Anyone who only counts filament usually underestimates the real cost by a factor of three to five.

How much electricity does a 3D printer use?

A typical printer draws between 80 and 250 watts while running, depending on heated bed, nozzle and build volume. At 150 watts and 90 minutes of printing that is 0.225 kilowatt hours, or about 8 cents at 35 cents per kilowatt hour. That sounds like little, but it adds up noticeably over hundreds of prints.

Do I have to count my own working time?

Yes. Every minute spent removing supports, sanding, checking and packing is work that has to be paid for. Anyone who values their time at zero works for free and only notices once orders pick up. An hourly rate of 25 to 40 euros is common for manual work in a small business.

What does Etsy deduct from my selling price?

Etsy charges a transaction fee of 6.5 percent and a payment fee of 4 percent plus 30 cents per sale. VAT-exempt small businesses additionally pay 19 percent VAT on those fees, which they cannot reclaim. The calculator adds the fees so that exactly the amount you want is left after deduction.
