The Etsy fees in detail

Which fees does Etsy charge on a sale?

Every sale incurs two fees: the transaction fee of 6.5 percent and the payment processing fee of 4 percent plus 30 cents. Both are calculated on the total amount, that is item price plus shipping. On top there is a listing fee of USD 0.20 per listing, due every four months or with every sale.

Why does Etsy charge fees on shipping as well?

Etsy treats the shipping amount paid by the buyer as part of the revenue. The transaction fee and the payment fee are therefore charged on item price plus shipping. If you charge 4.90 euros for shipping, about 51 cents of fees on that amount have to be covered by the item revenue.

What does VAT on fees mean for VAT-exempt sellers?

Etsy is a company based in another EU country and invoices its fees without VAT. The seller has to pay the 19 percent to the tax office themselves. Regular VAT-registered businesses reclaim it as input tax, so for them it is a zero-sum game. Small businesses exempt under § 19 UStG cannot, so for them the 19 percent is a real cost.

What are Offsite Ads and can I switch them off?

Etsy advertises listings on Google, Facebook and other platforms. If a sale results from such an ad, Etsy charges 15 percent of the order value, or 12 percent for shops with more than USD 10,000 in annual sales. Shops below that threshold can switch Offsite Ads off in the settings; larger shops cannot.
